1. It impacted life in urban areas by making life slightly easier, more time for leisure. Society as a whole became perhaps a little lazy? What with new technology and all, they didn't have to do extra work. I really don't know that this is the answer you're looking for, but it's the best I could come up with.
2. It transformed Britain and Europe from a manual labour based economy to a machine based economy. Started a migration from the country to the towns and so on.
